CD doesn't display on my DVD player

There are several reasons this could be. The first thing to check is that the CD has been written correctly. If it has the CD should look similar to this in Windows Explorer:

There may be additional files also (e.g. INSTALL.EXE, AUTORUN.INF etc). If you cannot see the above folders (i.e. CDI, MPEGAV, SEGMENT and VCD) then the CD has not been burnt correctly.

If the CD looks OK in Explorer then the following problems could exist:

  • Your DVD player does not support CD-R or CD-RW disks (older DVD players and DVD players with single lasers may not be able to read CD-R/RWs) If you have not tried a CD-RW this might help as some DVD players play CD-RWs better than CD-Rs.
  • You used a poor quality CD-R. If the DVD player recognises the disk but can't display the pictures it could be that the CD-R you have used is too low a quality. Try a better quality CD-R or try a CD-RW disk.

DVD player displays a dark blue screen

If you get a dark blue screen it could be that PBC (Playback control) is not enabled on your player.

Try pressing the Stop button and then the Play button on your DVD remote control.

Another possibility is that your DVD/VCD player cannot play VCD 2.0 disks properly. This is common with some software VCD players. In this case you need to upgrade your equipment.

Camera won't display the images

Latest version: Make sure you are using version 3.01 or later (See About tab)

Edited images: If you have edited the images with a paint package (or similar) before running them through xatshow the paint package will remove vital information from the image. Make sure the images are straight out of the camera and have not been edited in any way. If you want to edit the images (or used scanned images, images from the web etc.) you'll need the Standard Edition of xatshow and use the "Use Camera Information from this file" facility in the advanced tab:
Use Camera Information from this file
In the above box specify a reference image that definitely does contain camera information. We recommend taking a picture of your lens cap, ideally at 640x480 resolution and keeping it on your hard disk as a reference image.

Wrong filename: Most cameras will not display the images if the filename is not in the form they expect. Example are: P2240001.JPG for Olympus DSC00001.JPG for Sony. Make sure your image names are like the names that your camera uses MeAtTheBeach.JPG will not work!
N.B. If you have the Standard Editon you can get xatshow to automatically rename and renumber the images with the "Re-name and re-number images starting with" option on the advanced tab:
Re-name and re-number images starting with

Wrong digital camera folder: Make sure you put the pictures back into the same folder in the memory card as you removed them from. E.g. if the pictures were stored in folder H:\DCIM\100MSDCF make sure that is where you put them.

Wrong camera type: You have selected the wrong type of camera or you have an old model. Try using "Generic Digital Camera" as the camera type.
Camera Type: Generic Digital Camera

Un-supported camera: Another possibility is that your camera will not display images that are loaded back into it. In this case you will not be able to use xatshow with your camera.

Thumbnail is the wrong shape or the wrong way round

xatshow does not alter the stored thumbnail.

My images are rotated incorrectly

If your camera has an image sensor and it is turned on the image orientation (landscape/portrait) will be stored in the JPEG file and xatshow can use this to turn the image the right way up. In other cases you have to fix the orientation manually. With the Freeware Edition you can choose to rotate all images processed by 90 degrees etc with the advanced tab. With the Standard Edition you can rotate each image individually with Manual mode.

How do I get the images back in the camera?

You need to use the card reader or USB/Serial cable that was supplied with your camera. Please refer to your camera instructions. Note that it may not be possible on some cameras. Also please make sure you put the pictures in the correct folder in the memory card.
